Large and richly illustrated book about the artist Carl-Henning Pedersen by Mikael Wivel.
Mikael Wivel describes Carl-Henning Pedersen's universe: Populated by birds, horses, and ships. And the sun shines – often multiply – from the dark skies.
The symbolism seems clear enough. The sun stands for life-giving, and birds, horses, and ships for progress and freedom. The bird is the incarnation of thought and inspiration. The horse has always, and among all peoples who have known it, stood for strength, dynamism, and untamed sexuality. It is the incarnation of power, action, and procreation. And the ship with its sails steers across the sea towards coasts and foreign lands – it is the incarnation of possibilities and survival.
The symbols are thus not randomly chosen but carefully considered and should be seen as an expression of a strong drive for freedom in the painter himself.
Art historian Mikael Wivel wrote the book to mark Carl-Henning Pedersen's 90th birthday in 2003. He arranged a large retrospective exhibition of Carl-Henning Pedersen's works – an exhibition that was first shown at the National Gallery of Denmark in Copenhagen and later at the artist's own museum in Herning.
