With an ironic and playful attitude, the HELHESTEN (HELL-HORSE) motif grew into Carl-Henning Pedersen's works during the years of World War II. In Nordic folklore, the three-legged horse heralded misfortune, but from 1941, it also became the name of a journal created by Carl-Henning Pedersen and other leading modernists of the time. The journal HELHESTEN galloped for the last time in 1944, but its ideas lived on with Carl-Henning Pedersen and in CoBrA (1948-51).
