The mask became part of Carl-Henning Pedersen's repertoire of motifs as early as the 1930s. The inspiration was found, among other places, in the National Museum's ethnographic collection. The mask figure became a recurring motif in the desire to create a new art that spoke to all people regardless of time and place. With simple features and big and small eyes, Carl-Henning Pedersen's mask became a universal symbol of human thoughts and of art's archetype.
